Skin care products – Are they aging your skin faster?
The majority of skin care products are chemically formulated to create the appearance of younger, healthier looking skin. But the results are often a temporary illusion, and through prolonged use, these products can actually damage your skin and accelerate the aging process.
What is Transdermal Toxicity?
Otherwise known as “transdermal poisoning”, it is the penetration of toxic chemicals through the skins surface into the body.
The human skin is a living, breathing organ. It can protect our bodies from environmental toxicities and hazardous elements, but it is not an absolute barrier. Skin is a porous tissue; it allows body moisture to exit for the purposes of controlling body temperature, and it also eliminates toxins from our system. Conversely, a variety of small-substance particles can penetrate the skin and accumulate in the underlying tissues, eventually finding their way into vital organs through the blood and fatty tissue.
Dreadfully, most skin care products contain acidic chemicals, harsh synthetic ingredients, and tainted oils. Some examples include parabens, propylene glycol, synthetic colors & fragrances, mineral oil, isopropyl alcohol, sodium hydroxide, sodium lauryl sulfate, and thousand of other toxins and carcinogens. Skin care products containing these ingredients are chemically formulated to create the appearance of younger, healthier skin, but this illusion is only temporary. Consequently, the use of these so-called “skin care products,” not only endangers ones health, they also damage the skin and accelerate the aging process. Furthermore, many of the registered chemicals used in body care products are not only toxic, they are also considered endocrine disruptors. Since the skin is a permeable membrane, meaning it absorbs the chemicals that it comes in contact with, endocrine disruptors have the ability to negatively affect our hormonal system. Luckily, legislations have been passed to severely restrict, control, or ban the use of these chemicals in health, beauty and skin care products.
During his term as the Governor of the State of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger signed SB 1379 that would create a state bio-monitoring program. The bill defines chemicals as, “Chemicals that are known to, or strongly suspected of adversely impacting human health or development, based upon scientific, peer-reviewed animal, human, or in vitro studies.” The Governor stated: “There are literally thousands of chemicals being used in our everyday products in the United States; in cleaning supplies, pesticides, COSMETICS, and more. It’s important to know more about how those chemicals are building up in our bodies or how they may be affecting our health.”
There are approximately 100,000 registered chemicals for use in the United States. Many of these chemicals are not only toxic, they are also xenoestrogens, “Xeno” meaning foreign. The synergistic effects of exposure to xenoestrogens are well documented. These toxic chemicals increase the estrogen load in the body over time, are difficult to detoxify through the liver, and have the ability to compound symptoms of estrogen dominance, thus increasing the chances of pathology and systemic inflammation.
Transdermal poisoning, the penetration of toxic chemicals through the skins surface into the body, is known as transdermal toxicity. Sadly, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not have the financial means or the fortitude to regulate the cosmetic industry and/or the ingredients used in their formulations. Therefore, it is important that we educate ourselves and know that the chemicals being used in our body care products are not harmless, but are in fact deadly poisons containing carcinogenic chemicals that are absorbed by our systems. We must be informed in order to make better choices when buying skin and health care products in order to avoid transdermal poisoning.
At DNA Health Institute, we select the finest ingredients from around the world for our formulations. In our strict ingredient selection process, we choose only those ingredients that are 100% natural, chemical, and preservative free. In addition, the herbs used in our products are always certified organic. These ingredients must be fresh in order to retain the vital, energetic life-force of the products. We keep them fresh by the use of our proprietary, Ionic chemistry, method. We know of no other company that can, or is willing to use this method because it is not commercially feasible. Instead, they add dangerous preservatives to their already toxic formulation.
